Photo Competition Hints

Last Year’s Photo Contest winners are:

Why we like them?

In the first image, the diver is not looking straight into the camera. The photo is authentic and not posed. The photograph was taken in the Great Lakes, which is a challenging environment to shoot and brings with it an awe-inspiring story. The second image gives a wonderful perspective of the size of the wreck as compared to the size ratio of the divers. Viewers appreciate the intensity of seeing such an awesome wreck underwater. Divers are silhouetted, so non-Dive Rite gear is not apparent.

They are authentic…nothing posed about them at all. The cameraman simply grabbed the image on the spur of the moment and it worked. The first image was taken on an I-Phone. Although the diver is looking into the camera, the juxtaposition of the diver in the foreground against the seashore with dive flag in the background, plus the odd angle creates an interesting image. The second shot definitely depicts the dive boat lifestyle, the pre or post dive briefing, no dive gear is apparent, but that’s okay…we get a good sense of the lifestyle.

The photos are awe-inspiring in their composition. The first image depicts the dark, closed quarters of a cave with a diver intently searching for something and not posing for the camera. The second image implies a stomach-churning drop into a vast cave system. The small size of the diver set against the enormity of the cave gives us pause as we contemplate the diver’s inconsequential presence as compared to mother-nature.
